Tournament Competition Guidelines & Formats

Tournament Competition Guidelines

Injury Protocol

Suffering an injury is unfortunate for anyone involved, particularly for the injured individual. Should an injury occur to a player after the commencement of the tournament's first game, their team will be disqualified from the tournament. Any matches played during the pool phase will be invalidated if the pool phase has not been completed. In the event of an injury during the elimination rounds, the team will be withdrawn from the competition, but their prior matches in the bracket will still be recognized. Should an injury prevent the completion of an elimination match, the opposing team will be granted a victory by forfeit.

Forfeit Rules

In instances where a team forfeits during an elimination match, regardless of the reason, their next scheduled opponent will automatically advance with a forfeit victory. Teams that have lost to the forfeiting team will retain their losses and will not advance, nor will they take the place of the forfeiting team in the winners' bracket if they have been eliminated or moved to the losers' bracket.

Tie Breakers

Determining Tiebreakers In the case of a tie within the same pool where all teams progress:

  • For a tie between two teams: 1) Outcome of the match between the tied teams.
  • For a tie among three teams: 1) Outcome of matches among the tied teams; 2) Point differential from these matches to resolve the first position, then reverting to match outcomes to rank second and third positions.

When determining seedings across different pools with all teams advancing:

  • Winning percentage; 2) Total point differential.

Tournament Management Goals

The tournament directors aim to maximize the amount of volleyball played by all participants. The feasibility of this goal depends on the availability of courts and scheduling constraints.

Tournament Formats

Explore various volleyball tournament formats designed for players of different preferences and skill levels. Whether you're looking to compete in a dynamic team environment, test your skills in a doubles setting, or showcase your individual talent, there's a format for you.

King/Queen of the Court

Description: King/Queen of the Court is an exciting and fast-paced volleyball format that prioritizes continuous play and competition. Unlike the King/Queen of the Beach format, where players rotate partners and compete in a round-robin style, King/Queen of the Court features a "winner stays on" approach. In this setup, teams or individual players challenge the court's reigning "kings" or "queens" in an attempt to dethrone them and become the new rulers themselves. This format encourages quick matches, strategic gameplay, and allows players to engage in numerous games against a variety of opponents without the need for pre-set teams.

Duration: Events can vary in length but typically last around 3 to 4 hours, ensuring players get plenty of action and opportunities to challenge the court.

Games: The number of games depends on participation levels and the duration of the event but expect a high volume of quick, successive matches.

Key Feature: The "winner stays on" rule is the hallmark of this format, creating a dynamic environment where players or teams must defend their title against all challengers. This continuous competition format fosters a highly engaging and energetic atmosphere.

Ideal for: Players looking for non-stop action and the chance to continuously challenge and be challenged. It's perfect for those who enjoy a lively, competitive setting and the opportunity to play against multiple opponents, enhancing both skill and strategy in quick succession.

King/Queen of the Beach

Description: Designed for individuals without a partner, this format focuses on 2x2 games, where you're paired with different partners throughout the event. It's a fantastic way to meet other players, particularly for those new to the area or looking to expand their volleyball network.

Duration: These tournaments typically last around 4 hours.

Games: Participants can expect to play a total of 9 games, offering ample opportunity to demonstrate versatility and adaptability with various partners.

Coed 4x4 Rotating Pairs Tournament (CRPT)

Description: This fun and engaging format allows you to sign up with a coed partner and enjoy a night of coed 4's volleyball. The twist? You maintain the same partner throughout the event but rotate the couples you compete with and against. It's an excellent opportunity to meet players from all levels and enjoy a diverse gameplay experience.

Games: Expect to play between 8 to 11 games over a span of 5 to 6 hours.

Key Feature: The constant rotation adds a unique element of surprise and strategy, as you'll need to quickly adapt to playing alongside and against different couples throughout the tournament.

Coed, Women’s, or Men’s 2x2

Description: Tailored for those who prefer the intensity and strategic depth of doubles play, these 2x2 tournaments allow you to sign up with a chosen partner. You'll compete in a division that matches your skill level, ensuring fair and challenging matches.

Format: The competition begins with pool play, where teams face off in 1-2 games against every other team in their pool. Success in pool play leads to an elimination bracket to determine the ultimate winners and prize recipients.

Games: The number of games depends on pool size and tournament structure.

Reverse Coed Tournaments

Description: In reverse coed volleyball, the traditional roles are flipped: men are primarily responsible for setting and defense, while women take the lead on attacking and blocking. This format encourages strategic play and teamwork, highlighting the strengths of both male and female players in a unique setup.

Blind Draws

Description: Blind draw tournaments add an element of luck and spontaneity, as players do not choose their teammates. Instead, teams are formed randomly, challenging participants to adapt to new teammates with each match. This format is ideal for players looking to test their skills in a variety of team dynamics and enjoy a day filled with surprises and new connections.

Each of these formats offers a distinct way to enjoy the game of volleyball, whether you're seeking a competitive edge, looking to improve your skills, or simply aiming to have fun and meet new people.
